FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
TORONTO, February 14, 2019 – The Financial Accountability Office of Ontario (FAO) has just released a commentary that provides an updated comparison of Ontario government revenue, spending, deficit and net debt with that of other provinces.
The commentary reveals that the Ontario provincial government raised the lowest revenue per person in Canada in 2017. Ontario’s low revenue is matched by similarly low spending. In 2017, Ontario program spending was lowest among provinces, particularly in health care.
On a per capita basis, Ontario’s deficit was $271 per person in 2017, below the average of other provinces. However, the FAO forecasts Ontario’s deficit to more than triple in 2018 and deteriorate further going forward.
